Black Sand Beach Photography Session on the Big Island

Pololu Valley is located on the north west coast of the Big Island of Hawaii and makes one of the amazing options for Black sand beach photography. I have been down here for hikes with family and friends multiple times and have been dying to actually have an elopement or family session—whomever is brave enough to go through a small hike down (and then a good steep hike back). It’s funny how I have waited for three years and then I suddenly have a few people within a span of a few months wanting to go there for a session. If you haven’t been, let me tell you: Pololu Valley is beyond magical! Between the mountains, valley, black sand, pine forest, river, and the many rope swings—it is absolute photographer’s heaven!

Now, weather here is tough to accurately predict. Because of it’s remoteness (there is zero cell service here!) there isn’t really good weather forecast except for a town about five miles away. And even that isn’t all that accurate. So braving a magical location also means being open to some weather changes. And believe me you can find yourself with partly sunny weather here, only to have a torrential downpour an hour later. BUT it is all worth it! You can’t find anything like this on the Big Island (well there is Waipio Valley—equally magical but a much much longer hike!). So who want’s to a session here next?!?!
